The “5-second rule” has developed a meaning of its own when it comes to food. However and whoever created this phrase did not base it off of scientific research. Based on its grown popular it has almost become part of our culture. In turn, scientist became interested. Unfortunately, the 5-second rule is a myth. As soon as the food touches another object, the bacteria from that object can hop right now. Whether the floor looks clean or dirty, bacteria is still present. The floor is only as clean as the mop used on it. Think about eating your food off of the wet mop; is that bacterial free?
Also, depending on the type of food dropped determines how much bacteria can be picked up. For example, moist food such as turkey or fruit would attract more bacteria then a cracker. Keep this in mind next time you drop any type of food. I am not saying do not eat it; just know bacteria can contaminate the food as soon as it touches the surface. Are you willing to risk sickness? Be smart!
